THE RULES
OF THE GAME.
Jurassic Miles is freedom, endurance and respect. Here you can find the complete event rules.
RULES
JURASSIC MILES.
The sporting event called “Jurassic Miles” is a non-competitive event. The event is organised by ASD ENDURANCE RUN, an amateur sports association. “Jurassic Miles” takes place in Rovereto, in the archaeological area known as the “Dinosaur Tracks”.
Description of the Area
Hundreds of footprints left by carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs of different shapes and sizes are preserved along a steep rock gully about two hundred metres long, on the slopes of Monte Zugna, south of Rovereto. The rock outcrops date back to the Early Jurassic, around 200 million years ago, and are the fossil remains of a large tidal carbonate platform, in many respects comparable to the present-day shores of the Persian Gulf. There are six stratigraphic levels within a sequence of layers just over five metres thick. Because of their major scientific importance and the risk of deterioration affecting all the Lavini di Marco trackways, the Museo Civico di Rovereto has produced casts and a digital terrain model of the area containing the footprints. (From the official website of the Museo Civico di Rovereto).
Another distinctive and geologically very interesting formation is the Fungo di Albaredo, which we encounter on the first Out & Back course.
Race Format
The race is run in an Out & Back format on two courses, repeated as loops in sequence a different number of times depending on the chosen distance, specifically:
Jurassic 100M: 7 times (4,300 m D+) – start at 17:00 on Friday;
Jurassic 50M: 3.5 times (2,150 m D+) – start at 08:00 on Saturday;
Jurassic 23K: 1 time (615 m D+) – start at 11:00 on Saturday;
The maximum times allowed to complete the courses are:
Jurassic 100M: 32 hours (24:00 on Saturday);
Jurassic 50M: 16 hours (24:00 on Saturday);
Jurassic 23K: 13 hours (24:00 on Saturday);
During the final hours of the race, based on the athlete’s time of entry to and exit from the Aid Station, the organisation may stop a competitor if it is clear that they cannot complete the remaining part of the race within the time available.
The Out & Back courses are:
1st Out & Back “Orti”: 10.80 km, 275 m D+
2nd Out & Back “Fungo”: 12.30 km, 340 m D+
The courses always start and finish at the same place, where the Aid Station is located.
General Information
Almost the entire course (95%) is on trails/fire roads, with short sections on asphalt (5%).
There is a single Aid Station in the Start/Finish area, where the checkpoints and refreshment areas are located.
The course is marked with signs and/or ground markings and/or light signals.
The start is escorted for the first 200 metres, up to the entrance to the first fire road.
Registration Requirements
Adult athletes may register if they hold a competitive sports medical certificate valid at least until the day after the event (19 September 2027). The certificate must be sent by email and, if requested, shown when collecting the race bib. Membership of a club and/or affiliation with a sports federation is not mandatory. Athletes who are currently serving or have served doping-related suspensions will not be accepted. No qualifying races are required to register, although suitable athletic preparation is strongly recommended. The athlete must acknowledge the length and specific nature of the event, which differs substantially from other races, and be aware that participation requires a high level of physical preparation in order to deal with situations demanding considerable physical and mental self-sufficiency. Poles are permitted; they may be picked up and left whenever the athlete considers appropriate, but only inside the Aid Station and within the athlete’s personal area.
Aid Station
The Aid Station is divided into several areas:
Checkpoint area: located immediately next to the Start/Finish. Volunteers will check each athlete at the end of every Out & Back and mark the race bib. The athlete may choose to set off again immediately or stop in the refreshment area;
Refreshment/changing/showers/crew area:
100/50-mile changing/refreshment area: at the rear of the Baita degli Alpini, under a covered and wind-sheltered area, there will be the main solid/liquid refreshment point and a bag storage area. Athletes may also use a “quick” refreshment point immediately next to the checkpoint;
23K changing area: a changing/bag storage area for 23K athletes will be set up in front of the Baita degli Alpini;
23K refreshment point: the 23K refreshment point is shared with the “quick” refreshment point for the other two distances and is located immediately next to the checkpoint. It provides essential solid and liquid refreshments appropriate to the event;
Showers: the shower area is shared by everyone and is located in a covered, sheltered area between the 23K and 100/50M changing areas.
Crew: crew members may stay and provide assistance outside the refreshment/changing areas. Tables and benches will be reserved in a dedicated area close to the checkpoint or main refreshment area. Crew members may not collect or return their athlete’s drop bag; the athlete must take the bag out and return it to the storage area. To optimise storage space, there will be a second storage area inside the Baita for the post-race bag. Athletes are therefore asked to use one small bag (drop bag, 40 × 40 cm base) for the race only, leaving anything not strictly necessary during the race in the other bag.
Kitchen/organisers area: access inside the Baita degli Alpini is restricted to organisers/volunteers and the area is used as a kitchen and storage space;
Event area: located in the square outside the Baita degli Alpini, it opens one hour after the start and remains open continuously for the duration of the event. The area is open to everyone attending the event and is managed by organisers/volunteers. Visitors may support and encourage athletes while maintaining appropriate behaviour and respect for others;
Pacer & Crew
Pacers and crew are permitted for the 100-mile and 50-mile distances only. Where possible, the organisation will try to make pacers available. A pacer may accompany the designated athlete after the halfway point: after 3 complete loops + 1 Orti section for the 100M, and after 3 complete loops for the 50M. The pacer may stop and start again according to the athlete’s needs. The pacer may not carry the athlete’s equipment and may not provide food or drink assistance to the athlete along the course. Pacers must hold a competitive sports medical certificate valid at least until the day after the event (19 September 2027).
Support groups (crew) are permitted. When providing assistance, the crew may remain inside the refreshment area only during the time their athlete is stopped there and must not disturb or obstruct other athletes. A maximum of 3 crew members per athlete is allowed. Pacers must carry the dedicated pacer bib. A pacer is considered a member of the crew, so an athlete with several crew members may potentially have more than one pacer (up to 3), but only one may be active at a time. Pacers may access and use the refreshment area and/or other specific services by showing their bib.
At the Aid Station, athletes without a crew will have a dedicated personal space (100M and 50M only) where they can leave a bag containing their equipment, drinks and food. As the course follows an Out & Back format, athletes will pass through the Aid Station approximately every 10/12 km.

Withdrawal and Partial Refunds
If an athlete is unable to take part, withdrawal must be communicated by email to info@jurassicmiles.it. Registration may be transferred to another person with a €20 surcharge and at least 15 days before the event. Alternatively, a 50% refund is available until 31/05/2027; no refunds are available after that date. If the event is cancelled due to force majeure up to 10 days before the event, the organisation reserves the right either to refund 50% of the entry fee paid or to transfer the registration to the next date set by the Organising Committee. This percentage reflects the many costs that the organisation will already have incurred and cannot recover. If the event is interrupted or cancelled because of weather conditions, or for any other reason beyond the organisation’s control, no refund will be due to participants.
How to Register
Online, following the instructions on www.jurassicmiles.it and through the WeDoSport platform.
Liability
The athlete releases the organisation from any liability for medical problems that may occur before, during or after the race, having been informed of the medical contraindications relevant to them.
If emergency medical services (118) need to be activated, including the possible use of a helicopter, any costs arising from the intervention of services external to the organisation, before, during or after the event, cannot be charged to the organisation.
The athlete participates in the event under their own responsibility and releases the organising association from any liability for damage caused to or suffered by people, animals or property before, during or after the event.
Mandatory Equipment
Cup or bottle for drinks at the refreshment point (no cups will be provided);
a charged mobile phone is required in case the organisation needs to be contacted;
for night-time hours, a headlamp;
Recommended Equipment
0.5-litre water reserve.
Energy bars or equivalent food.
Waterproof windproof jacket
Emergency blanket
Trail shoes
Spare battery or spare headlamp
Power bank
Clothing suitable for the weather and night-time conditions
Remember that every 10/12 km the athlete returns to the Aid Station, where assistance and their drop bag will always be available.
Logistics / Camping
Logistics: ASD Endurance Run has deliberately organised the event to minimise vehicle traffic as much as possible. A shuttle service therefore runs from the town (meeting/parking area at Piazzale Achille Leoni) to the vicinity of the Start/Finish area. Shuttles stop about 500 metres from the start (Cappella Santa Barbara); from there everyone must continue on foot, gently uphill on an asphalt road (about 10 minutes), carrying everything they need or consider necessary. 100-mile athletes will be guaranteed transport up to the Start/Finish area.
On Friday there will be no shuttle service for visitors, but the road will remain open to traffic up to 500 metres from the Start/Finish area.
The shuttle service will operate to a strict schedule for athletes, who will have a predetermined departure time allowing them to reach the Start/Finish area for bib collection, the briefing and, of course, the start. The service will also be available to visitors in defined time slots, which will be communicated in the days before the event.
Athletes will always have priority over other passengers on the outward journey.
Shuttle times will be communicated through the event website and social media channels.
From Rovereto, the event Start/Finish area is about 6 km away with approximately 350 metres of elevation gain, along an easy asphalt road.
Camping: a camping area will be set up at the sports field in Albaredo. Parking and toilet facilities will be available. From the camping area, the Start/Finish area can be reached on foot via a route of about 2.5 km or by following the race course exactly. Athletes/crew may go to the camping area, set up their equipment and then travel independently down to Rovereto to take the shuttle, or walk independently to the Start/Finish area via the approximately 2.5 km route or by following the race course for about 4 km. The camping area will not be supervised and relies on everyone’s good behaviour and compliance with the law. Useful information and updates will be provided on the website or social media channels.
General Notes
Course Familiarity
Knowing the course provides physical and mental advantages during the race. We recommend studying the courses carefully and becoming familiar with them.
Night Running
During night-time hours, in addition to the mandatory headlamp, it is advisable to carry a spare lamp and/or spare batteries. If your lights fail, wait for another runner with a working light and return with them.
Self-Sufficiency
The races are considered self-sufficient events, but inside the Aid Station you will find a well-stocked refreshment point with solid and liquid food. You may also leave whatever you consider appropriate in your personal space (100/50 miles).
Depending on the weather or during night-time hours, the organisation may provide a hot/liquid refreshment point at the turnaround of each Out & Back.
Weather
Temperatures during the race may range from below 0°C to over 30°C, and participants must be prepared for both extremes. Weather conditions are unpredictable and can change quickly. Athletes may leave anything they consider necessary in their personal space inside the Aid Station. Remember that athletes pass through the Aid Station every 10/12 km.
Withdrawal
If you need or want to withdraw from the race, here is what to do:
stop and think about whether you really want to withdraw and why; look for another reason to continue and carry on;
if you do need to withdraw, immediately call the contact number printed on your bib and report your condition, whether you need assistance and/or whether you can return independently to the Aid Station. State which Out & Back course (1/2) you are on and at which kilometre of your race you are located;
if you need assistance, we will make every reasonable effort to bring you back to the finish area;
in non-emergency situations, if you are able to walk, you must reach the Aid Station independently. Remember that you will never be more than 6 km from the finish area;
Conduct
Maximum courtesy and respect are required towards hikers, crew members, volunteers, athletes and anyone else encountered along the courses. The course will not be closed or reserved exclusively for registered athletes. The race takes place on fire roads where you may meet people who are not involved in or aware of the event. You may encounter animals along the course; please show them maximum respect and do not frighten them. Any athlete seen dropping litter will be disqualified. Athletes who find litter left by others are asked to pick it up and bring it to the Aid Station: setting a good example encourages others to do the same.
Insurance
The organisation takes out public liability insurance for the entire duration of the event. The organisation recommends that each participant have personal insurance covering participation in events of this kind, including accident, travel and evacuation costs. Helicopter evacuation in Italy is subject to a charge;
Image Rights
By registering for Jurassic Miles, the athlete expressly grants the organisation and its partners, free of charge, the right to use still or moving images in which the athlete may appear, taken in connection with participation in the event, on all visual media and in promotional and/or advertising materials produced and distributed worldwide, for the maximum period permitted by applicable laws, regulations and treaties, including any extension that may be made to that period.
Acceptance
By registering and paying the relevant fee, the participant accepts these rules without reservation.
Jurassic Miles Rules
The purpose of these rules is to ensure the proper conduct of the race and individual performances, providing equal conditions for everyone. The guiding principles are simple: run safely, respect the other competitors and respect the environment.
Violations of any Jurassic Miles rule or instruction may result in disqualification or other sanctions such as time penalties, fines and/or exclusion from awards.
Each athlete’s official race bib must be worn visibly on the front of the body and must remain clearly visible at all times.
Runners must follow the course.
Each runner must complete the entire course without outside assistance. Physical or mechanical assistance is not permitted, except for the pacer as provided by these rules. Assistance may not be provided outside the designated points (refreshment area), except for medical assistance.
Every runner must be recorded or checked at the Aid Station. At the end of the Out section and start of the Back section, our volunteers will carry out a manual or digital check.
At the discretion of the medical staff, additional monitoring of individual runners may be required. Refusal to cooperate fully may result in immediate disqualification. Medical/health personnel may, at their sole discretion, withdraw a participant from the race and invalidate the race bib. Rescue personnel are authorised to evacuate participants considered to be in danger by any means they deem appropriate.
Runners must refrain from any act of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Any runner unable to complete the race must personally inform the nearest aid station or checkpoint of their decision to withdraw.
Runners who cross the finish line after the time limit will not be listed as official finishers.
In the event of bad weather, weather alerts or for safety reasons, the organisation reserves the right to suspend the race.
The Courses
01 - Orti
From the Baita, the course descends on asphalt. The first 200 metres overlap with Course 2, then it continues downhill for another 200 metres to join the Orti di Serravalle fire road. The fire road forms a balcony over the valley below, where enormous boulders shape the Lavini di Marco, which are believed to have inspired the great poet Dante Alighieri (“…that ruin which on this side of Trent struck the Adige on its flank…”). The outward section can be divided into a first part that is mainly flat and gently downhill, followed by a second part with a gentle, steady climb. The outward leg ends in an open area (Orti di Serravalle) overlooking the Vallagarina towards Ala and Avio, which serves as the turnaround point. On the return, after about 4 km, a junction leads to the Caditoi Inferiori, the only true trail section of the entire course and the only section that is not Out & Back. After about 1 km and 100 m D+, you emerge below the Dinosaur Tracks and descend until reconnecting with the final section of Course 02, Il Fungo. Shortly afterwards you return to the Aid Station.
Total Out & Back: 10.80 km, 275 m D+ | 6.30 mi, 625 ft
02 -- Il Fungo
On paper, this is the more demanding of the two courses. The first 200 metres are identical to Course 01, then the route turns sharply left towards the north-east along an easy forest road climbing towards the Dinosaur Tracks. After about 400 metres, a left-hand junction leads through a series of bends into a section where tall black pines and oak woods alternate with rocky walls. The forest road becomes gentler and at the 2nd kilometre reaches a small plateau, Sorgente del Prà, where there is a small spring. Soon afterwards the route passes alongside the Fungo di Albaredo over gentle rolling terrain. After another 100 metres, a barrier marks the start of the steepest section of the entire course: a 400-metre concrete road. At the end of this short section, the course joins the provincial road for about 700 metres. This section will be marked by a line of cones defining approximately one metre of the carriageway. The Monte Zugna provincial road is not particularly busy, but caution is required and athletes must remain within the marked area. After this short asphalt section, the route turns right onto the Galai forest road for about 2 km. A gazebo marks the end of the course: from there, turn around and return.
Total Out & Back: 12.3 km, 340 m D+.
